Boom Founder and CEO joins AWS Keynote at re:Invent

Blake Scholl shares how AWS is supporting the design and manufacture of Overture, the world’s fastest airliner.

“What does a revolution in high-performance computing have to do with a revolution in high-performance aircraft?” began Boom Founder and CEO Blake Scholl.

Following Boom’s decision to go “all-in” on Amazon Web Services (AWS), Scholl stood on the re:Invent stage to explain the significance of AWS’s services and infrastructure for the development of Overture, the world’s fastest airliner, and future of high speed flight.

“We’re going ‘all-in’ with AWS because high-performance computing is key to this new era of airplane design,” said Scholl. “AWS helps us continuously refine our designs without compromise so that we can deliver a superior flight experience to the flying public.” Boom will use AWS services, including capabilities in Internet of Things, machine learning, compute, storage, security, and more to support Overture’s development and build.

For years, Boom has leveraged AWS’s portfolio of service to support the design and construction of its demonstrator aircraft, XB-1.

“Computational methods using AWS have saved us years of schedule and millions of dollars. Because we can test many designs quickly and inexpensively, we can deliver a better airplane.” All in all, Boom used 53 million core hours on AWS to design and test XB-1. In the same way, the company expects to use more than 100 million core hours to finalize the design of Overture.

Boom unveiled its supersonic demonstrator, XB-1 (LEFT) on October 7th, 2020. XB-1 is supporting the design and development of Overture (RIGHT), the world’s fastest airliner.

Boom’s mission is to make the world dramatically more accessible through supersonic flight and according to Scholl, AWS is helping to deliver on that promise.

“By the end of the decade, millions of everyday travelers will enjoy sustainable supersonic flight aboard Overture — an airliner twice as fast as any flying today,” said Scholl. AWS’s proven infrastructure and unparalleled portfolio of services are helping us deliver a revolution in air travel. I’m so excited to see what others will invent, when more of the world is within reach.”
